I purchased a copy of your new book on the R107 series. Overall it has been very helpful but there is a major omission. It does not de-code numbers on the riveted body plate on the front cross-member. I am looking at a car – a 1977 US model 450 SL and I want to know what “all the numbers” stand for. I have been unable to find this information anywhere. Further it does not tell me which paint colors are matched to which upholstery colors. And it does not show what an engine number stamping looks like and how those numbers might run… same as the serial number?
Do you have this data? If so, I’d love to see it. Thank you.

The numbers indicated on the riveted body plate on the front cross-member are corresponding to two items :
1) Internal production numbers : for those, they are related to the production process into the Mercedes plant and don’t really explain anyhing about the car ;
2) Paint code for body and hard top and option codes, the same that are indicated on the vehicule data card. With the VIN number, you’re able to get the data card from Mercedes Classic.
Basically all paint colors can match with any upholstery colors. Mercedes was doing some recommandations but everything was possible for a customer.
The engine number are indicated from pages 72 to 76 for each version. The last 6 digits indicated on the row engine code are corresponding to the first 6 digits from the engine number then it’s the serial number. The engine number from all V8 is very hard to see as behind the engine (see pages 116 and 117).
Last, you can find the gearbox number (first 6 digits then serial number) on the page 70.
All those informations (paint code, option codes, enginer number, gearbox number, upholstery code) are indicated on the datacard from any 107.

I have „read” the book and find it very informative. Also a good guide to those who wish to buy an R107. Now I understand why the Amercan 350 SL is not so sought-after and is cheaper than other models (engine output). And lots of other details. A very comprehensive bible. The only thing that makes different models hard to compare is American measures. Miles are more comprehensible but how to comapre 24mpg to 17l/100km is more cumbersome. I guess the American market is a priority that’s why.
Last but not least thank you for mentioning Mercedes-Benz Classic Club Poland at the end of the book. Also I have identified 33 names from Poland – out of which 19 are Club Members – and MB Classic Presidents from Australia and South Africa.
